Frugal Endeavors – February and Free both start with F.

March 5, 2019

As March was wandering in like a very, very cold lion, I was telling a co-worker about all the wonderful things on offer at our local library. When I told her everything was free, she said, ” ‘Free’ is my favorite F-word!” High praise from her since she, like the rest of us at our little store, suffer from chronic potty mouth.

Regardless of our love of colourful language, the statement rings true for me as well. Dreary February 2019 was made much brighter because of the many things I was able to obtain that did not cost me a penny.

As mentioned above, my local library is an incredible resource. In both February and March, I have kept myself entertained reading borrowed books. If you have not checked out the library in your area, I strongly encourage you to do so. It is an incredibly valuable and extremely low cost resource.

The sun made the occasional appearance. This meant that we could let the fire go out during the afternoon because we could take advantage of the free heat.

A gift in the mail!

One of the high points came in the mail. I won a contest at From Just Another Day on the Farm by making the most comments on her post – not hard as her posts are very informative. If you get a chance, you should check out her blog.

We had a shipment of eggs that was damaged, resulting in several cartons with smashed eggs. One co-worker salvaged the eggs that were still intact and portioned them out to the rest of the staff. I brought home a dozen for us to use.

My store has been running a promotion where you get so many tickets for a chance to win groceries. I cashed in my “free” coupons and this is what I brought home.

Whoo hoo! free stuff for me.
Not shown is one other container of yogurt that I had already stashed in the freezer.

All these free groceries were in addition to the groceries we bought using the cash from a returned gift and a gift card received earlier this year. In total I got a whooping $103.14 in free groceries last month. I’m pretty pleased with that.

Amish Friendship Bread

Gave away a couple of loaves of Amish Friendship Bread along with sourdough starter. Getting free stuff is a two way street after all.

So, how was your week? What role does free stuff play in your life? Leave a comment and tell me about it. I love hearing from you!
